When
traveling in Europe our best advice is to buy a prepaid phone
card before you leave.

calling cards is simple and can be a great way to save money
on your trip. Remember, just because you are on vacation does
not mean things have stopped back home. If you do need to communicate
with someone at home, or simply call ahead to your next hotel
to confirm
your reservation, here’s some advice.
To phone the U.S. from Europe first dial the international
access code (00) and then the U.S. country code (1), next dial
the area code and phone number as usual.
The
most expensive call home is from your hotel room. There are
not
laws governing
how much a hotel can charge you for a phone call in Europe.
If you want to make a reasonably priced call, go outside and
use our phone cards from a pay phone. Opur rates are as low
as fifteen cents per minute to call from the UK to the USA.
If you are calling the US from abroad, remember the time difference
so
your
call isn't coming in the middle of the night.
There are two types of pay phones in Europe; the traditional
phone that accepts coins, and calling card phones. Calling
card phones have almost made coin phones obsolete. Thus, you
really do need to have a phone card to call back from abroad.
Once you purchase the calling card to bring with
you,
make sure you get the access numbers needed to call from overseas.
Internet cafes are becoming
very popular in Europe. If you want to keep in touch with
home or work while traveling, set
up a Hotmail account, or learn how to access your regular e-mail
from a remote computer. Then you can stop by a café,
have a cup of coffee, and log on to the Internet to access
your email. Fees are based on the length of time you use the
computer. Some hotels have a internet computers available for
guest use.
To phone Europe from the U.S. first dial the international
access code (011) and then the country code and city code that
you are calling, and finally the specific number. Pushing #
after dialing speeds up the calling process. Listed at the
bottom of this section are country codes for many European
countries. Occasionally a telephone number for Europe will
have an extra 0 at the front that you will drop when dialing.
